About this deal

Dracula cast members Edward Van Sloan and Dwight Frye were effectively asked to reprise their earlier roles by playing Frankenstein’s mentor, Dr Waldman, and his hunchbacked assistant, Fritz, respectively. He enlists the help of Fritz who steals a healthy specimen from the anatomy lab at the local medical college. Upon first sight of that dreadful scar and the protruding neck bolts that attach the monster's head to his body, it's impossible not to be overrun with the thought that this is the 'monster that started it all" over SEVENTY years ago.

Literally kept in wraps until this moment, Karloff's rendition of the scarred creature makes us immediately forget all the cheesy knock-offs and commercial effigies of the monster's persona. Victor regrets trying to play God because his action would cause him great troubles and consequences. Some modern sources note that the set design of the windmill sequence was inspired by a building in Los Angeles that housed a local bakery, Van de Kamp, which displayed a large windmill as its corporate logo. Frankenstein is determined to destroy the creature, and leads one of several groups looking for the monster, up the mountainous terrain. As soon as the person has life, Victor realizes his creation is a monster and immediately regrets the monster he has brought to life. They go through the mountains by torchlight until Henry finds the monster, and the two engage in a struggle that continues in an abandoned mill, where the monster has fled. Although Waldman had much respect for Henry's brilliance, he became increasingly disturbed when Henry began demanding fresh bodies for his experiments in chemical galvanism and electro- biology: bodies that were not those of cats and dogs, but human beings. Looking for a quick way to capitalise upon the huge and unexpected success of Dracula, Universal Studios made the obvious move and put into production an adaptation of Frankenstein. The brilliant decision by director James Whale to have Boris Karloff enter the room with his back turned to the camera, adds one last moment of delayed gratification, further fermenting the audience's now feverishly heightened sense of fear. a comedy short made by Universal, in which he is once again strangled to death by the Monster despite the narrator's attempts to warn him.

Balderston, it's what crosses over to the movie that leaves us with a fascinating and truly horrifying tale of what happens when man plays God without pausing to consider the ramifications.According to material contained in the production file for this film at the AMPAS Library, the original Carlo Collodi story was written in installments for an Italian weekly magazine. For the pivotal role of the Creature, however, the production team was no closer to finding the right actor—until fate took a hand. Legends abound about Lugosi’s early make-up tests for the role, which claim that he was photographed wearing an ungainly headpiece that seems to have been modelled upon Paul Wegener’s appearance in the 1920 version of Der Golem. Arriving on the set of Frankenstein, James Whale immediately made his presence felt, insisting upon the casting of two of his former collaborators in the roles of Henry and Elizabeth: Colin Clive, who had played Captain Stanhope in Journey’s End, and Mae Clarke, who had played Myra in Waterloo Bridge.
