About this deal

In 1177, King Henry of England granted “the kingdom of Cork” to the Cambro-Norman knights Robert Fitz-Stephen and Milo de Cogan. Marconi came here to try to send his first radio message across the Atlantic and he fitted the first telegraphic equipment to the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse to communicate with the passing ships. You pass the old Roadstone Quarry on the side of the mountain, which provided metalling for the roads of Wales unti 1945. From this station, they then began to communicate with passing ships during the day via semaphore and by lights at night. Crookhaven village stands on the south side of the harbour, approximately one mile from the entrance.

With a sectored lighthouse at its entrance and its deep clear waters, the harbour provides safe access to all visiting vessels, at all states of the tide, in all reasonable conditions, night or day. Initially, not too many ships had the required equipment to make use of the facility, but this changed soon. Topping the list: the luxurious lighthouse in the southern village of Crookhaven — complete with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing the Atlantic’s hypnotic blue waves. From a boating perspective, the picturesque and sheltered harbour of Crookhaven is just as important for the sailing community today as it was for the sailing ships of the past.In the middle of the narrowest part of the inlet, just off the southwest corner of Rock Island, keep an eye out for an uncharted small and unlit racing buoy. Streek Head, opposite and forming the southern point of entrance to the haven, is also conspicuous, rising steeply from the sea to an elevation of 44 metres. Despite a permanent population of less than 50, Crookhaven is geared up to meet the needs of boating visitors and tourists alike and most requirements will be taken care of here.

Built in the 15th century on the site of a Bronze Age Promontory Fort, the Castles stand sentinel beside a cliff top lake. The Walshes may have had to use a pick axe rather than a spade to plant in their seaside garden but growing conditions, thanks to the greenhouse climate of the Gulf Stream, are incredible. These rocks extend about 135 metres north from Alderman Rocks and are marked by the Blackhorse Rocks beacon. Here he had his major breakthrough with telegraphic messages being transmitted and received from Poldhu.

Diesel is available by jerry can from O'Sullivan's pub, and WiFi is free to vessels utilising the moorings. The pub was once owned by a Mr Nottage, who came to the village from England to work at the Marconi signal station. Hmmm… notions of grandeur there, perhaps – and little regard for practicalities, but it shows the power of imagination! One of the fascinations of old industrial sites is the way they are taken over by nature if left relatively undisturbed.
